PUTRAJAYA - Ketua Kontinjen Malaysia ke Sukan SEA Indonesia 2011, Datuk Naim Mohamad tetap yakin tuan rumah mampu mengelolakan temasya dwitahunan itu dengan cemerlang walaupun timbul masalah tentang penginapan atlet dan pegawai.

Menurut beliau, Indonesia sudah pasti akan memastikan negara yang menyertai temasya ini berada dalam keadaan selesa dan tidak berdepan dengan sebarang masalah yang boleh menyulitkan aksi atlet dalam setiap acara yang disertai.

"Dalam masa yang sama kita juga akan mendapat bantuan daripada kedutaan Malaysia di Indonesia yang juga akan menubuhkan sekretariat khas bersempena temasya ini," katanya pada sidang akhbar selepas Perasmian Perhimpunan Atlet Sukan SEA Indonesia 2011 di IOI Resort, Hotel Palm Garden di sini, semalam.

Jelasnya, seramai 80 urus setia dilantik untuk menguruskan perjalanan atlet dan pegawai Malaysia yang berjumlah keseluruhan seramai 891 orang, sambil mengharapkan mereka dapat memberikan perkhidmatan terbaik.

"Kita sedar jumlah urus setia tersebut agak kurang tetapi dalam masa yang sama kita mengharapkan mereka mampu bekerja dengan lebih efisien sambil mengharapkan semua pihak dapat memainkan peranan masing-masing," katanya.

Naim berkata, setiap penganjuran tetap mempunyai masalah tersendiri dan ia terpulang kepada negara yang menjadi tuan rumah untuk menanganinya sebaik mungkin.

Dalam pada itu, Ketua Pengarah Majlis Sukan Negara (MSN), Datuk Zolkples Embong berucap pada pada majlis tersebut memberitahu, sebanyak 18 buah hotel di Jakarta akan menempatkan atlet negara.

Sementara itu, di Palembang terdapat lapan hingga sembilan buah hotel bakal digunakan oleh separuh atlet negara yang akan mengambil bahagian di bandar tersebut manakala separuh lagi akan menginap di perkampungan sukan.

Menurut timbalan ketua kontinjen, Datuk Syed Mustafa Syed Ali, atlet negara yang akan menginap di perkampungan sukan di Palembang adalah daripada sukan yang berdekatan gelanggang pertandingan.

Azizulhasni tepati ramalan atlet terbaik Anugerah SAM

PETALING JAYA - Jaguh lumba basikal negara, Mohd. Azizulhasni Awang dipilih atlet terbaik Anugerah Persatuan Penulis-Penulis Sukan Malaysia (SAM)-100 Plus 2009, semalam.

Kemenangan tersebut membolehkan pemenang pingat emas acara keirin Piala Dunia 2009 di Beijing, China itu membawa pulang RM10,000.

Ibu Azizulhasni, Selamiah Yong mewakilinya menerima anugerah itu daripada Timbalan Perdana Menteri, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Azizulhasni yang kemudiannya dihubungi secara langsung dari Melbourne, Australia memanjatkan kesyukuran dengan pemilihannya sebagai pemenang anugerah tersebut.

Kata Azizulhasni, anugerah SAM merupakan satu pengiktirafan besar kepadanya, sekali gus membakar semangatnya untuk terus berjuang dalam sukan kegemarannya itu.

"Pertama sekali saya ingin memohon maaf kerana tidak dapat hadir pada majlis ini kerana menjalani latihan di Melbourne. Kalau boleh, saya sememangnya ingin hadir pada majlis ini.

"Namun begitu, ibu saya, Selamiah Yong telah hadir di majlis ini bagi mewakili diri saya.

"Anugerah ini satu yang besar kepada diri saya dan ia meningkatkan lagi semangat saya untuk memberi yang terbaik di masa depan.

"Terima kasih kepada semua pihak dan tidak lupa kepada keluarga serta isteri yang telah banyak menyuntik semangat kepada saya selama ini," kata Azizulhasni, semalam.

Dalam pada itu, Selamiah yang ditemui pada majlis tersebut berkata, dia berbangga apabila anaknya dipilih sebagai atlet terbaik SAM 2009.

Katanya, anugerah tersebut pastinya akan membakar lagi semangat Azizulhasni untuk terus mencipta kegemilangan pada masa akan datang.

"Dia (Azizulhasni) seorang yang gigih dan akan melakukan apa yang disukainya dengan bersungguh-sungguh.

"Saya berharap dia akan mencapai cita-citanya selama ini iaitu mencipta kegemilangan di Sukan Olimpik akan tercapai.

"Pesan saya kepadanya, teruskan usaha dan jangan lupa diri. Kami sekeluarga akan terus memberi sokongan kepadanya," kata Selamiah.

Dalam pada itu, wartawan Kumpulan Utusan, Shahril Nizam Abdullah dari akhbar Kosmo! muncul pemenang Anugerah Kewartawanan Sukan SAM dan Kementerian Belia dan Sukan (KBS) bagi laporan khas terbaik.

Kemenangan tersebut membolehkannya membawa pulang RM7,000.

Kosmo’s Shahril walks away with top prize

KUALA LUMPUR: Journalist Shahril Nizam Abdullah of Kosmo won the Overall Media Award in the Sportswriters Association of Malaysia (SAM)-100PLUS awards ceremony yesterday.

Shahril received RM7,000 and a trophy from Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Shabery Cheek.

He also received another RM3,000 for emerging overall best writer in the special report category and RM500 each for his nominations under the best print media, best commentary report and special report categories, making it a total of RM4,500.

Star Publications’ S. S. Kanesan was voted the best photographer and he took home RM3,000 and a trophy.

The Star sports desk’s Rajes Paul pocketed RM1,500 and plaques for three nominations under the best print report, best sports report and best special report categories.

Azizul's efforts earn sportswriters' award

CYCLIST Azizul Hasni Awang's brilliant performance last year was duly recognised as he was named the Sportswriters Association of Malaysia (SAM)-100Plus 2009 Athlete of the Year in Petaling Jaya yesterday. Azizul, who won the 200m sprint silver medal in the World Championships in Poland and keirin gold in the World Cup IV in Beijing last year, overcame stiff competition from shuttler Lee Chong Wei and four-time world squash champion Nicol David to secure the award.

Azizul, who was unable to attend the ceremony due to his preparation for next month's World Championships in Copenhagen and to focus on his studies, was elated with the win.

His mother Selamiah Yong received the award and RM10,000 on behalf of Azizul from Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

"I've never won this award before and it is a timely boost for my campaign in the World Championships in Copenhagen," stated Azizul via telephone from Melbourne yesterday.

"Last year, I was only nominated and it is actually a shock to win the award this time. I would like to thank all quarters for the support I have and I am hoping to go for gold in the World Championships."

Besides Chong Wei, who won the award last year, and Nicol, swimmer Daniel Bego -- winner of five gold in the Laos Sea Games, divers Pendelela Rinong-Leong Mun Yee -- who won the synchronised 10m platform bronze in the World Championships, and the national women's badminton team -- who won the Sea Games gold for the first time in 30 years, were the other nominees.

The national Under-23 football team also won a special award for capturing the Sea Games gold after 20 years.

Timesport's Ajitpal Singh walked away with the best news commentary award which fetched him RM3,000 .

KUALA LUMPUR – Majlis Olimpik Malaysia (MOM) memuji saranan Timbalan Perdana Menteri, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin yang mahu menggerakkan usaha secara besar-besaran bagi menghidupkan semula aktiviti sukan di sekolah-sekolah.

Presiden MOM, Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Jaafar berkata, ia satu usaha yang memang dinanti-nantikan terutama dalam menggalakkan pembangunan berterusan di peringkat akar umbi.

Bagaimanapun tegasnya, Kementerian Pelajaran tidak boleh melakukannya sendirian sebaliknya perlu menjalinkan kerjasama rapat dengan pihak terbabit yang lain.

“Kementerian Pelajaran perlu mewujudkan koordinasi dengan Kementerian Belia dan Sukan, MOM dan persatuan-persatuan sukan.

“Ini bagi memastikan perancangan dapat dilakukan secara menyeluruh dan berkesan agar dapat mencapai matlamatnya.

“Saya percaya sebagai bekas menteri yang pernah menerajui kementerian berkaitan sukan, beliau (Muhyiddin) tentunya faham dengan apa yang hendak dilakukannya,” kata Tunku Imran.

Beliau berkata demikian selepas mempengerusikan mesyuarat Lembaga Eksekutif MOM di sini, semalam.

Menurutnya lagi, beberapa faktor perlu diambil kira Kementerian Pelajaran dalam melaksanakan usaha itu antaranya mendedahkan sekolah dengan sains sukan, memaksimumkan kemudahan sukan di sekolah dan tidak hanya mengadakan karnival sukan setahun sekali sahaja.

“Yang paling penting pihak kementerian perlu menyediakan bajet secukupnya untuk diberikan dalam bentuk elaun kepada guru yang terbabit sebagai dorongan menjadi jurulatih di sekolah-sekolah,” tegasnya.

Sementara itu, Timbalan Presiden, Persekutuan Kebangsaan Berbasikal Malaysia (PKBM), Datuk Naim Mohamad berkata, usaha Muhyiddin itu memang tepat pada masanya ketika sukan negara semakin bergerak ke hadapan.

“Banyak masalah yang timbul sebelum ini walaupun perbincangan demi perbincangan dilakukan antara persatuan dengan Majlis Sukan Sekolah-Sekolah Malaysia (MSSM).

“Dengan adanya usaha seperti ini, saya percaya segala halangan yang wujud dapat diatasi untuk melahirkan lebih ramai bakat-bakat baru,” ujar Naim.

Menurutnya, antara masalah utama yang timbul ialah dari segi pelaksanaan dan kebimbangan pihak sekolah tentang keselamatan pelajar-pelajar mereka.

“Saya percaya dengan pengumuman terbaru daripada Kementerian Pelajaran ini, satu mekanisme dapat dicari untuk mengatasi masalah dari segi pelaksanaan ini,” jelasnya.

Hosts have most number of riders again for LTdL

PETALING JAYA: Host Malaysia will again have the most number of riders — 15 — for the seven-stage Tour of Langkawi (LTdL) from Feb 9-15.

Italy will have 11 riders, followed by Australia (9) and France (8).

South Africa, Kazakhstan, Iran, China and South Korea will field six riders each.

Spain, Switzerland and Japan will have five riders, Ukraine three, and the United States, Germany, Austria, Venezuela, Tunisia, Algeria and Indonesia two each.

Belgium, New-Zealand, Canada, Holland, Slovenia, Poland, Ireland, Sweden, Britain, Moldova, Colombia, Argentina, Mongolia, Syria and Qatar will have one rider each.

LTdL chief operating officer Datuk Naim Mohd said the event was becoming more international despite the reduction in the number of participating teams from 25 last year to 20 this year.

Last year, a record 30 nations lined up for the race but the provisional start list for this year’s will see riders from 35 different countries and five continents.

The youngest rider will be 19-year-old Vadim Izotov of Kazakhstan and the oldest is 37-year-old Shinichi Fukushima of EQA-Meitan-Hompo.

Rizal Tisin won gold despite the low track temperature.

THE Negaraku was played an unprecedented two times at the Laoshan Velodrome in Beijing yesterday thanks to Azizul Hasni Awang and Rizal Tisin registering the country's first double haul of UCI World Cup gold medals.

World No 1 Azizul, riding for the BT Australia team this time, delivered an overwhelming performance, winning every heat including the star-studded keirin final for his second successive UCI World Cup gold medal.

The repeat of Azizul's historic first gold medal at Round Two of the World Cup in Melbourne in November, came with a bonus of the World Cup leader's jersey he swept off the back of Frenchman Francois Pervis.

This was just reward for Azizul, as the gold medal also came as redemption at the same track on which he committed a tactical error to miss out on the Olympics keirin final last August.

It was a case of being relegated to second twice in a day for Frenchman Pervis.
In the 1km time trial, Rizal held back pain in his right hand to upstage the Frenchman for the gold, taking his surprise first ever World Cup medal in a time of 1:02.268s, which was just short of his 1:02.157s Asian record set in Australia last month.

Cofidis rider Pervis clocked 1:02.642s to finish second ahead of Poland's Kamil Kuczynski who clocked 1:03.020s.

Azizul's day of glory came sweet as he achieved it via a final which included France's Gregory Bauge (second), Teun Mulder of the Netherlands (third), New Zealand's Simon Van Velthooven, American Travis Smith of the Hawk Relay team and Australia's Shane Perkins.

A determined Rizal, 24, said he had nothing to lose and just pulled himself together to focus on his one mission right from the moment he woke up yesterday morning.

"Nothing else mattered and my mind was just set on riding all out to the death in my heat. I really wanted the medal, but I did not expect the gold," said Rizal.

"We knew the track temperatures would be low, thus the times would be slow. So, to get a time so close to my personal best was also quite a good feeling."

Former keirin World No 1 Josiah Ng, riding for the national team, fell flat of expectations when he finished fifth in his first round heat and also failed to progress via the repechage.

Teenager Fatehah Mustapa continued her rise on the world stage with a creditable eighth place in the 500m time trial, with a time of 36.284s, which was just a shade off her national record of 36.155s set at last year's Asian Championships.

It was, however, a time that left the 19-year-old with more work to do as it was a far cry from the 33.834s set by Lithuania's Simona Krupeckaite, who won the gold ahead of China's Gong Jinjie who clocked 34.941s.
